G.E as a fairy tale (08/02/11)
G.E as a fairy tale
Name of the hero : Pip = very short, remembers of numerous fairy tale heroes (Jack, Tom Thumb...).
The characters = standard cast of a fairytale. Convict = the ogre. Mrs Gargery = the bad stepmother.
Estella = the princess (p.49 « as scornful as a queen »). Miss Havisham = 'looking like the witch of the place' at the beg. then the fairy godmother. (Fairies are unreliable)
Pip = a boy version of Cinderella. From a blacksmith, living by the soot, to a sort of prince, then at the end = return of the status quo.
Animals and objects are given human powers.
Inverted fairytale. Since Magwitch in the churchyard = becomes the fairy godmother as he gives Pip everything + Estella chooses an ugly toad = doesn't wait for her prince charming + Miss Havisham has enter Estella's heart = ogress (feeds another people's life).
Success in turning Estella into a non-eater. Also the wicked mother : burns to death (cf. one of Cinderella's version).
Gothic inspiration = castle : Miss Havisham's house. Labyrinthic houses : corridors. p. 66 'corridor branches out'.
Mariage, life, sex linked to grave and death = highly gothic. + vegetation surrounding the castle = desert and ruins + churchyard. Life = Estella. But is she a human being or the ghost of a woman, a vampire created by Miss Havisham ? + since the 1st chapter : churchyard, threats, at night...
[The Vampire...1817]
Formal elements : written in the first person (against the traditionnal rules of fairytales).
But different purpose : fairytale=metaphorical, general, stages of progress in the human life.
Heroes and heroines are always in the action, never poses to think, no voice.
*hem...à compléter ^^
